Vision improving treatments
Many people detest wearing glasses or contact lenses.
Many people have unusual prescription strengths and have many optical side effects because of
glasses.
An increasing number of people suffer from chronic problems due to contact lenses and after a while
they are unable to wear them anymore.
Others experience discomfort with their current corrective method during work or sport
activities,
or it may even affect their choice of career.
Highly shortsighted people and those whom suffer from astigmatism are most interested in alternative corrective
measures.
The arguments are understandable.
The glasses are too think and unpractical.
The image through the glasses often alters a bit from reality.
Contact lenses are often impossible.
For this category any improvement is a "big success".
People with a slight shortsightedness are more likely to be disappointed since a small correction won't make as much difference to
them. Afterall, they could see well with glasses and might be affected by the possible side effects and they were used to the ones associated with glasses and
lenses.
Their expectations are often very high…they are expecting good, uniterrupted vision without glasses.
The new, unknown side effects are then hard to cope with.
Unfortunately the side effects can last for months.
The missing perfect sight, although "medically good" can be dissatisfactory for the patient.
In time more and more unsatisfied people become increasingly happy with their result.
They get used to the new side effects. Only very few remain unhappy with the final result.
Please keep in mind that it can take quite some time before your eye to stabilise.
Social aspects of refractive surgery:
Career choice.
Having had a lasik treatment now no longer affects the ability of starting a job within the civil service department.
The JAROP states that refractive surgery may affect your chance of becoming a pilot.
Funnily enough, it is unclear how much having (had) lasik affects this section.
According to trustworthy informers lasik doesn't account for failure/rejection.
The opinions on this matter vary a lot and can change by the time this is read by you.
Police, fire brigade and public transport all accept treated patients.
