Non-surgical Treatments
Orthokeratology
Using contact lenses with the aim of flattening the cornea to reduce shortsightedness.
Although this technique has existed for a long period of time, it is still a topic of discussion.
Initially hard contact lenes were used.
Recently new techniques are becoming more popular, such as Precision Corneal Moulding (PCM).
It is a long term programme during which several lenses are used consecutively, sometimes even at night.
This technique, like normal contact lenses, is not free from risks. It is still very
experimental.
Plus Lens Therapy (PLT)
Suggests that prescription of positive lenses will change the structure of the eye.
This should provide a basis for the prevention and reduction in shortsight.
It can be effective in young people with small corrections.
Naturally there are many pros and cons about this idea.
Bates Therapy
Based on relaxation and focussing exercises.
It is a long term technique that concentrates on exercises.
The final result is not really known and opinions vary on this technique's success rate.
