Intra Ocular Rings
At the end of the eighties medics in the USA began to realise that the middle section of a
contact lens didn't have much of a function. They thought a ring would work just as well.
They have come up with this technique:
Through a tiny incision in the cornea a small tunnel is created on both sides.
After that a little ring is pushed into each tunnel.
The incision is closed with a tiny stitch.
In case of any problems the rings can be removed.
We now know that once the rings have been removed the eye returns to its original
condition..
Advantages:
- No tissue removal
- The ring can be easily removed
- The rings are not in the middle of the cornea
Disadvantages:
- Only usable in -1,0 to -4,0
- High eye pressure is required when placing the rings. This can lead to bleeding of the retina
- If the rings aren't precisely placed the effect is not as good.
A slight difference between the left and right eye will cause disrupted images
- Common complications are: night vision problems, infection, perforation, wound infiltrations,
epithelium erosions and scarring
- The placement of the rings is complicated
