Thermic Laser Keratectomy - TLK
A special form of laser treatment is by using the HOLMIUM laser.
Excimer lasers are unable to correct farsight using the PRK method.
Even using the explained LASIK procedure this can be difficult.
Holmium lasers have been invented especially for this problem.
Small laserburns are applied to around the cornea at equal distances.
During the healing process the tissue around the cornea will increase the curvature.
Advantages:
- The treatment takes place outside the optical zone which means that blurry vision or corneal
scarring is practically unheard of in this procedure
- Has lately been promoted as the procedure to chose for is a lasik/lasek treatment is overcorrected
- It might be an adequate treatment for astigmatism
Disadvantages:
- Recent research shows that initial result of +3 are meant to be good. However regression happens frequently
- Other problems can be collagen regeneration, re-induced astigmatism and repeating corneal wounds
With another laser, the YDF laser, one can evaporate the tissue in the stroma without damaging the epithelium or
the Bowman layer. The company that manufactured these lasers no longer exists.
The continued development is this technique has been carried on by another
manufacturer.
