Compare the inner layers of the cornea with armed concrete.
A contact lens is created using a donor cornea and attached to the eye.
The edges of this section are stitched in a little wound that has been created around the eye's own cornea.
After some time the new cornea is fully accepted and dissolved into the own
cornea.
Advantages:
- No tissue is removed … it is actually added on
- The chance of rejection is small because of the special methods used
- If necessary, the extra bit of cornea is easily removed
- Curvature correction occurs in the attached new cornea
Disadvantages:
- It can take days to weeks before vision becomes clear again
- Rejection (although unlikely) can occur which will result in reversing the procedure
- There is an ethical debate to consider for the use of donor tissue for cosmetic reasons.
